Wacky Portable Snowboarding? Yes Please!
July 14th 2008 18:47
Greatest concept in the portable market right? right.
The SSX series has always been ludicrously entertaining, but bringing the game to a medium where you can take the experience on the road with you, wherever you may go, is fantastic. Being able to hit the slopes whilst being trapped in the hell of going to a laundromat to wash your things, seems like a huge plus.
So why isn't it?
Well to the biggest extent, it's because you've already played this game if you're an SSX fan, and it's called SSX 3. Every track is recycled for SSX On Tour on PSP, only without the ability to roam freely around the mountains, which was the whole selling point of SSX 3. Instead of snowboarding wherever you please, and finding different races and competitions on the way, now you choose which to go to, and then wait the painstakingly long time it takes to load that course. Truly ramping down the fun factor, especially when the idea of the game is to be portable friendly.
I was extraordinarily disappointed in the fact that you have no freedom, every track is one you've seen before. Multiple competitions recycle the same tracks over and over. And the loading times make the game especially obnoxious when you're playing while traveling. As PSP is supposed to serve as an entertainment device while you're away from the more powerful gaming systems at home, staring at loading screens just isn't how you imagine your time.
Other than that though, i guess the game plays great. All the joys of SSX 3 are still pretty well intact, except for free roaming of course. But still, it is snowboarding and now skiing mayhem, so a high amount of fun factor is still to be found.
Just don't expect something you haven't played before. Like I did, only to be sorely disappointed. Which is why I take the time to write this, because I should have researched the game first.
