The 'DiRT' series: As dirty as you can get
December 23rd 2010 06:18
When I was younger, I used to browse through various channels on TV, waiting for the annoying ads that kept interrupting my Pokemon watching sessions to get over.
As i flipped through these channels, I used to catch glimpses of WRC (World Rally Championship) races going on, and I used to wonder: 'Why on earth would anyone want to watch a bunch of cars driving around in the mud'.
I considered rally races a boring waste of time, until I laid my eyes on DiRT!!
It was the year 2006, and I had just upgraded my system, and got my first ever Graphics Card (After no end of pestering my parents and promising good results in exams). I used to love playing Need for Speed: Most Wanted at that time and so I went to the nearby store and asked the guy there to recommend a game just as fun as Most Wanted....
He said these very words: "NEED FOR SPEED?!?!...What're you, a baby? (I got the impression he didn't like NFS that very much)....Play this!!" and saying so, he slammed on the counter a copy of Codemaster's DiRT. When I saw the cover, I was seriously put off by the rally racing aspect of the game (Since, you know, I thought Rally = Scum). But I figured, hey, let's give it a shot!!!
That was the BEST decision of my life!
After a successful 20 minute install, I launched to be greeted by the Codemasters logo.
And then it began, one of the greatest experiences of my life.
At 15, I was a an age when i thought Quality of Games = Quality of Graphics. Nothing else mattered. And DiRT satisfied that very raw need of mine. But enough patronizing DiRT...Let me tell you, what I found attractive in it!!
First and Foremost, The Cars....Every Car was unique in some way or the other. Every single one of them handled differently. The noises made by the engine were just beautiful to hear. The liveries were good to look at....And the more you drove, the dirtier your Body and windshield would become, until ultimately what left the starting line as a pristine, beautiful looking car; would cross the finish line, as a big Metal lard of Dirt! You might wonder: 'How can messing up your car, by filling it with dirt, be a good thing?'..Well, I don't know, but what I do know is that it is satisfying!!
Next, the Flashback system. Ever get annoyed when your close to the end of the race, and then at the very last moment, you screw up and have to restart the whole race, in order to win again? I used to get really pissed off when that happened. And thats why I loved the flashback system...It offered you the chance to go rewind your race by a few seconds and then continue from that point. Simply brilliant!
And finally, The Looks!! DiRT looks AMAZING!!! The environment, the car's, the tracks...heck even the dirt on the tracks!! Everything looks Amazing!
If you haven't played this game yet...Then, believe you me, you've missed out on a lot!! Go play it!! It's worth every living minute you spend on it!
