A Short Bit On The Importance Of Music

Music can be an extraordinarily emotive resource for a game, and some of the most amazing moments you’ve had playing a game can be remembered largely in part by the music that accompanied them. But music games can be just as amazing, or involving as something that is supposed to pull at your heart strings. Games like Rock Band, and the Guitar Hero series are fast becoming some of the most memorable experiences in gaming because of their unique ability to let gamers that don’t play instruments, experience a small part of the passion involved in actually creating music from one.
But the game that has paved the way for most beat inspired music games, that most people forget now, just happened to be one of the greatest most memorable experiences most gamers have ever had. With a simple gaming gimmick, and some very memorable songs that I for one can still recall most of the words to, Parappa The Rapper.
A testament to how content is the most important factor of a game, and graphics really aren’t important compared to entertainment, fun factor, and overall originality of content. Sort of the way the original Grand Theft Auto, despite having unbelievably bad graphics, remained a fun game for giving you a unique perspective on a concept that hadn’t been done enough with the open world formula. Parappa showed how fun a music game can be. Although I’d recommend missing the PS2 sequel, because it was awful, Parappa still remains one of the most fun experiences you’ll find on a console. Not to mention with Sony’s re-elease on PSP, now you can rap anywhere.
So I’ll let the video above stand as a statement about Parappa’s genius, instead of talking about it here. Being that it’s a music game, you really probably should hear an example opposed to reading one anyways.
But for anyone who doesn’t know, for my Grand Theft Auto reference, this is in fact how awful the original looked:
